What kind of data can be put into a Code 39 barcode?
Any alpha-numeric (both letters and numbers) data can be encoded in a Code 39 barcode. The standard default Code 39 character set includes uppercase A-Z, the digits 0-9, a handful of math-oriented punctuation marks ( $ % + - . / ), and the space character.
What check digit and/or special start and stop character does a Code 39 barcode have?
A Code 39 barcode rarely includes a check digit. When data integrity is a concern, Code 39 uses an optional mod 43 check digit. The Code 39 checksum is added to the end of the barcode. The start and stop bars for a Code 39 barcode are asterisks ( * ). All Code 39 bar codes begin and end with an asterisk. For example: *PEACE* scans as PEACE.
